BIOGRAPHY:   Two families of Concord, Mass.  Dr. Josiah Bartlett (Concord physician) and Martha Tilden Bradford of Waltham announced their intent to marry in November, 1821.  Their children: Martha (born 1824); Gorham (1826); James Walker (1828); Elizabeth B. (1830); author George Bradford (1832); Samuel Ripley (1837); Annie Keyes (1840); Edward Jarvis (1842); and (David) Bradford.  Dr. Josiah's son Edward Jarvis ("Ned") served in the Civil War, returned to Concord, married Sarah Flagg French in 1873, died in 1914.  Edward Jarvis Bartlett's son William Bradford (1880-1960), medical director of the John Hancock Life Insurance Company from 1923 until 1946, resident of Hartford, Conn., and Concord, Mass., married Ruth Jackson.  Ruth Jackson was the daughter of Abraham Willard Jackson and Caroline Bradford Bigelow Jackson.  A.W. Jackson (1843-1911), a native of Maine and graduate of Colby College and Harvard Divinity School, was a Unitarian minister (his churches including parishes in Peterboro, New Hampshire, and Santa Barbara, California), a teacher at the Meadville Theological School, the author of The Immanent God and Deafness and Cheerfulness and of pieces on religion, philosophy, and other topics, a Civil War veteran, and for a time a resident of Concord.  His wife Caroline Bradford Bigelow Jackson was born in Livermore, Maine, in 1872, died in 1935.  Edward Jackson Bartlett, son of William Bradford Bartlett and Ruth Jackson Bartlett, was born in 1915 in Hartford.  A resident of Concord and later of Carlisle, Mass., he married Joan Motley (1921-1992), worked as a cabinetmaker in Concord, died in 1994.
 

SCOPE AND CONTENT:   Papers, 1832-1966, of or relating primarily to: four generations of Bartletts (Dr. Josiah, Edward Jarvis, William Bradford, and Edward Jackson); A.W. Jackson, wife Caroline Bradford Bigelow Jackson, and daughter Ruth Jackson Bartlett; and various other members of the Jackson family.  Also includes items relating to the French and Bradford families.

Series III.  A.W. Jackson and Caroline Bradford Bigelow Jackson papers, 1864-1908:  includes: "Waterville College" term bill for A.W. Jackson, 1864; eight letters from A.W.J. in Santa Barbara to wife Caroline, 1881-1883; eight A.W.J. manuscripts (on Browning [1888], Edwards, Holmes, Jones Very and Emerson, Lowell, Margaret Fuller, Whittier, and sermon "Thy Will Be Done"); A.W.J. typescript (on Thomas Wentworth Higginson); A.W.J. printed pamphlets (The Scientific Study of Literature, 1889, and Threescore and Ten: Mrs. Nathan B. Stow, 1897); A.W.J. printed books (The Immanent God, 1889, inscribed for Mary Wheeler; The Immanent God and Other Sermons, 1894, inscribed in 1908 to Ruth and Will; Deafness and Cheerfulness, 1901, two inscribed copies, one for Ella M. Bigelow).

Series IV.  Miscellaneous Jackson family papers, 1881-1961: includes: two photographs (one of A.W. Jackson, one of an unidentified young woman); TLS, Michael J. Dee to Mrs. Howard B. Jackson, 1946 June 27; scrapbook containing clippings of pieces primarily by A.W. Jackson, 1890-1910; scrapbook, 1910-1918, including obituary clippings on A.W. Jackson, Howard B. Jackson, Francis Turner Jackson, Ellen Tucker Emerson, Thomas Wentworth Higginson, and Mark Twain, an article on Poe by A.W. Jackson, and a variety of other clippings; scrapbook, 1881-1926, including obituaries of A.W. Jackson, a piece by him, an obituary on Miss Jennie D. Norton by Caroline Bigelow Jackson, obituaries of Howard B. Jackson and Francis Turner Jackson, various Livermore, Auburn, and other Maine obituaries (including Bigelow obituaries), and other items; and a printed program for the Change of Command ceremony of the U.S.S. Bartlett's involvements at Cottage Sanitarium, Saranac Lake, N.Y., Trudeau Sanitarium, Stony Wold Sanatorium, and M.G.H.; typescript of the funeral service at the First Parish in Concord for W.B.B., 11 November 1960; Ruth Jackson's volunteer certificate from the Old North Bridge Society of the Children of the American Revolution, 1898; postcard to Ruth [J. Bartlett], undated; collection of typescript poems (1926; 1929; most undated), including one with initials B.K.H.
